About Carrie

My name is Carrie Waller, and I'm the founder of DGD Pottery, which launched in 2018. My ceramics brand was named for the lifestyle blog that I launched more than 15 years ago in 2011, called Dream Green DIY, but before that I was working as a new college graduate with a degree in Studio Art and Art History.

I've been a writer and artist for as long as I can remember, and don't regret a single moment of my decision to pursue art professionally as a student at Christopher Newport University. My focus then was on graphite drawing, and I continue to spend time now, nearly 20 years later, honing my skills with a pencil and piece of drawing paper in between throwing sessions at my pottery wheel.

I feel like fine artists and historians so often categorize drawing as merely a means to an end—the first small phase of a larger, more permanent work. To me, though, a good drawing stands on its own. It is the foundation and "bones" of an art piece, and needs no paint or topcoat layer to make it officially finished.

Because of this personal philosophy, you'll find lots of single-layer drawings on my pottery. They're drawn in my home studio using a marker that I've manipulated into a "pencil" of sorts, so that I can sketch flowers using underglaze directly onto the surface of my fired, unglazed clay forms.

Underglaze is traditionally meant to be painted on with a brush in multiple coats to achieve an opaque color, but I'm so drawn to the slightly unfinished and transparent look achieved when applying just one single layer of underglaze.
